OUR PROCESS

SOFTCUT was created to merge two worlds together: the knife sales & servicing industry and the craft of bladesmithing. We believe that each of these worlds is indebted to the other. The selling and maintenance of chef’s knives requires a knowledge of how the blades were produced and by whom. Inversely, the production of blades is an iterative process that should be in constant conversation with the user well after the knife has been made. By bringing together two specialists from each of these industries, SOFTCUT aims to create exceptionally functional products that dive into advanced metallurgy and production techniques without getting lost in the backend of smithing.

Each SOFTCUT blade begins with unhardened stock either as raw bars or with rough preforms cut in. The steel is then forged, heat-treated, and ground to shape and thickness all by hand. The blades are burned directly into the handles for a tight, Japanese-style fit, allowing them to be removed for servicing or replacement later in their lives. We use a continuously evolving array of steels, believing that many blade styles require specific alloys for the task they’re aiming to achieve.
